Course Summary
Reference function of the library including print and electronic reference sources; development of interpersonal communication skills to increase effectiveness in response to patrons' information needs; effective search strategies for all types of reference.
This general reference course introduces students to the structure and organization of knowledge in both print and non-print resources. It covers reference services and the communication skills needed to interact with clients. The course also addresses the philosophy and procedures of database construction and the basics of searching CD-ROMs, OPACs, commercial databases, and the world wide web.
In this course there are a lot of time consuming library-scavenger-hunt type assignments. They are fun, and not difficult whatsoever, just make sure to set enough time aside for homework.

I took Rhonda McGinnis for this class, and as she's a librarian at the Purdy-Kresge Library, she really knows her stuff. She also has a sense of humor, and is very reasonable when it comes to grading. The assignments are very relevant to what you're learning, and they are not very difficult.
